One of Whatcom County's small town gems is Acme, located on Highway 9 about 9 miles South of Deming and 15 miles North of Sedro-Wooley. Having lived in Acme for a few good years, I am here to tell you that living in Acme is a wonderful and quaint example of what life can and should be like. There are probably only a few hundred folks that live in Acme, and the commercial district consists of the Acme General Store, run by Steve and Jackie, the Post Office, a church, and the Acme Cafe, complete with the licensed "Hawg Trough" for those of you with a thirst needing qwenching. Back in the heyday of logging, Acme was booming, with the railroad and mills to boot! The mills are all gone these days, but the railroad still runs through town a few times each day. You'll hear the whistle. Plenty of bikers and sightseers tour through Acme for Sunday drives and summer trips, and during hot summer weekends scores of inner-tubers put in at Acme, on the South Fork of the Nooksack River on their way down-river towards Clipper, or the Van Zandt bridge to take out. By the way, for you tubers...keep the river clean...pack it in, pack it out...and respect private property along the way... Ok, back to Acme...Dairy farms, timberlands, truck-farms, vacation homes, as well as old craftsman homes, farm homes, big and small acreage parcels, riverfront homes, contemporary homes...these all exist and are occasionally for sale in and around Acme. Prices for homes for sale in and around Acme are quite a bit less than Bellingham or Lynden homes for sale. The same holds true for prices on acreage for sale in and around Acme. A good bang for the buck, if you can stomach the 1/2 hour drive to Bellingham or Mt. Vernon! In Acme you will be sheltered from Nor'Easters that scream down the Fraser River Valley...but you will get more rainfall than in Western Whatcom County. The soils are good here too. The temperature will be a little cooler here in winter as well, compared to Bellingham, but since you'll be away from the Nor-Easters, chances are that the wind chill factor will be less here than around Sumas, Lynden, Everson or Meridian. We always had great gardens in Acme! Welcome to Acme!
