With approximately 9,000 residents, Lynden, WA is a lovely farming community located in north central Whatcom County. Known for its Dutch influences, Lynden offers residents and visitors alike an unmatched mix of bakeries, specialty shops, and restaurants. Lynden attracts many visitors to its Pioneer Museum, one of the largest of its kind in the state of Washington. It is also the proud host to the ever-popular Northwest Washington Fair. Offering world-renowned entertainment, horse races, a world-class carnival, and 4H attractions, the fair welcomes more than 200,000 guests each August. Lynden is also the supposed town the famous 1980's movie "Footloose", starring Kevin Bacon, was based upon.
Some of the best high school basketball in Washington State is played in Lynden. Both Lynden Christian and Lynden High Schools boast a number of state championship banners. Lynden also just recently won the Washington State 2A Football Championship as well.
Although cookie cutter developments seem to be always encroaching on rare, gorgeous farmland, the Lynden area still is the center of the nation's best producing berry crops...to include Raspberry, Blueberry and Strawberry crops. While a part of the Greater Fraser River Valley, Lynden enjoys the slow moving and meandering Main Stem of the Nooksack River passing close by to the downtown. While most of town is out of the floodplain, the river still does overflow its banks on occasion to deposit the alluvial silt that produces such arable mother earth.
Lynden itself is a mix of older, craftsman style homes and newer, architecturally inspired dwellings. Pride of ownership seems very present here...the rare fixer home being the exception rather than the rule. When driving through town don't miss the beautiful yards with well maintained flowers and shrubs, not to mention nice yards too. Lynden reminds me of a quaint Midwest American town. Prices range from the mid $150's to over half a million bucks for a great place to call home!
Don't miss the Windmill on Front Street, and keep an eye out for the wonderful Mt. Baker and Twin Sisters Mountain views!
