Regardless of your lifestyle, you will find unmatched beauty, quaint charm, and endless activities and recreation in Whatcom County. Whatcom County real estate for sale stretches from Northern Puget Sound in the West (now increasingly called The Salish Sea) all the way to the high mountain peaks of the North Cascades Mountains to the east, way past Mount Baker, at Ross Lake. Whatcom County real estate for sale ranges from the southern boundary at the Skagit County line, to the northern boundary at the International Canadian border.
Mt. Baker is the highest place in Whatcom County, peaking out at around 10,800 feet. Yes, I've climbed Mt. Baker. Of course, the lowest natural elevation is sea level, at, of course, the sea. Whatcom County is home to the North Cascades National Park, known to be the wildest National Park in the lower 48 states. There are Grizzly Bears reportedly in Whatcom County, and I can honestly say that I have seen one, with a witness to prove it! Plenty of Black Bears too. Cougars as well. Blacktail Deer. And a small but steady population of Elk, including the ones in my back yard led every year by that big 5 point. Moose? Well, when I was in college at Western Washington University in Bellingham, there was a moose rambling through Bellingham...but I never saw it personally. Salmon? Kings, Silvers, Humpies, Dogs and Sockeye. Steelhead Trout too, along with Cuthroat, Rainbow and Brookies...and my neighbor nabbed a 3.5 lb Brook Trout one day. Saw it. Wolves? Maybe, since they are located one county to the east. And plenty of smaller animals live here too. Otters. Seals. Sea Lions. Whales.
There is an eclectic mix of people here, sharing the landscape with the flora and fauna of Whatcom County. Lynden is home to a largely Dutch population, with the greatest number of churches per capita in the US. Commercial fishermen, Loggers, Millworkers (wood and aluminum), Oilworkers at Whatcom County's two refineries near Ferndale, Farmers, Professors, and many, many Government and medical field workers. Speaking of farmers, Whatcom County is well known for its dairy producing farms, but did you know that we are the top Raspberry AND strawberry producing county in the entire nation? Bellingham has its artists and musicians too. Galleries and shops. Museums. Plenty of culture. Lots of nightlife as well. A great music scene. The Mount Baker Theater!!!
The tourism industry is huge in Whatcom County. From nature lovers to thrill seekers, Whatcom County can offer hikes through old-growth Northwest forests, world class mountaineering and rockclimbing around Mt. Baker and the Cascades, awesome whitewater rafting on the mighty Nooksack River, river and sea-kayaking, eco-tours, whale watching, beach walks...boating, sailing, diving....the list goes on and on. In fact, Jacque Cousteau once claimed that our scuba diving in the SanJuans was "the best in the world", and being a diver, I can say it's pretty doggone good. It's pretty cool to be able to be at my real estate office in Bellingham in February and within 20 minutes be on a deserted lowland elevation forested trail! Lest I forget, lots of biking and bike-trails here as well. I mustn't neglect to mention Mt. Baker, with gorgeous skiing and snowboarding areas from beginner bunny trails to backcountry Warren Miller like runs. Lake Whatcom and Lake Samish provide great water sports venues. GOLF? You bet. 18 local courses, I believe!
Whatcom County is home to some pretty good athletes, from rugby and soccer to snowboarders and skiiers. Our high school's trophy cases are chock full of state champion team's and athlete's trophys.
I am high on Whatcom County, and hope you will love it here as well. Let's keep it green, too. We're blessed with what many publications claim is the best place in America to live! To retire. To start a business. To raise a family.
With top rated and highly acclaimed Western Washington University in Bellingham pumping out graduates, our local education system is rated at the higher end of Washington State's student's scores. Every school district in Whatcom County is a good one! Great teachers!
Oh, one more thing...as far as real estate goes here, locally? Bellingham and Whatcom County's homes for sale and real estate values have weathered the country's economic downturn far better than most areas in America. While far from a perfect economy, we have a relatively stable economy due to the number of retirees, the influences of our three institutions of higher learning (Western Washington University, Bellingham Technical College, and Whatcom Community College), strong industry base, strong medical facilities, farming, and heavy governmental employment.
